Workshop Description
There are many templates regarding how to write effective query letters and similar documents (synopses, bios, etc.), but there are far fewer resources concerning how to communicate beyond those initial exchanges with agents and publishers.
One common refrain we hear from writing professionals is that all forms of creative writing are a business. The ability to “switch gears” and write in a more business-like fashion is a relevant skill for authors to master. This is not always easy, as the techniques that make creative writing successful do not always translate to business communication.
This workshop will therefore cover the key components of writing for business purposes, examine how it differs from creative writing, and share tips for ensuring your written and in-person communications are precise, professional, and effective.
Instructor Bio
Steven grew up near Detroit and graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in English literature. He also completed 3 years of coursework in industrial engineering, worked for the student newspaper and solar car project, and placed in several writing competitions.
He’s since spent over 15 years working in the natural resources, shipping, and IT industries for several multinational corporations in The Hague, Leiden, London, and Geneva. He currently lives in France and works for an industrial robotics startup in San Francisco.
Steven has presented at industry conferences, written speeches for company executives, and worked on numerous presentations, reports, and other analysis throughout his career.
In addition to his corporate roles, he worked as a freelance journalist for The Holland Times. He published chapters in 2 flash-fiction novellas with colleagues. He was shortlisted last year for the for the streetcake experimental writing prize.
