Artful Prose: Crafting Pounding Sentences and Slick Layered Syntax
with Mary-Jane Holmes
And the words slide into the slots ordained by syntax and glitter as with atmospheric dust with those impurities which we call meaning. Anthony Burgess, Enderby.
The words glitter but it is the syntax that gives words the power to relate to each other in sequence, to create rhythm and emphasis and carry meaning.
In this workshop we will be exploring how we can manipulate the internal shape and pace of sentences to create particular effects. We will discuss time and flow as well as the relationship between the rhythm and the sense of the writer’s words and how through embedding tone and mood in the language’s syntactical arrangement, we can successfully steer the reader’s emotion.
