The GWG Presents:

ELI KEREN (CURIOUS MINDS LITERARY AGENCY)

THE ANATOMY OF A NONFICTION  PROPOSAL

SUNDAY 25 FEBRUARY 2024

Where: Maison Internationale des Associations, rue des Savoises 15, 1205 Geneva

Time:   10:30-16:30

Morning session - 10:30 - 12:30

ANATOMY OF A NONFICTION PROPOSAL

In this two-hour session, we’ll cover an overview of what a proposal is, what it does, why we use proposals (as opposed to full manuscripts) and what parts a proposal should consist of. We’ll take a look at each of the sections of the proposal in detail and discuss what makes them work and what common pitfalls authors fall into. We’ll cover the golden questions that make a proposal successful and participants will be invited to share their answers.

Afternoon session – 14:00 - 16.00

PUTTING YOUR PROPOSAL TO WORK

In this afternoon session, we’ll look in more detail at the make-or-break sample chapter of the proposal, and we’ll discuss how to put together a pitch that’ll grab an agent’s attention, then hear one another’s pitches for feedback. We’ll talk about genres and the market and how to make a proposal standout in a crowded field.

There will be time for Q+A after the workshop.

Bio

Eli Keren started his publishing career at Curtis Brown before joining United Agents as an assistant in 2016. In 2021 he became an associate literary agent, representing a growing list of clients across fiction and non-fiction, actively seeking books that are going to make a positive impact in the world in some way, big or small. He moved to Curious Minds Literary Agency in 2024. Before working in books, Eli was a research scientist designing and synthesising novel drugs (white coat and everything), and science books remain a particular passion of his. He is also very interested in LGBT-themed books in both fiction and non-fiction. In 2022 he wrote and taught the Jericho Writers’ ‘How to write a non-fiction proposal’ course, and in 2023 he was elected treasurer of the Association of Authors’ Agents.
