World-Building
with Jon Steele
In the beginning when God created the heavens and earth...
The first ten words of the Bible that pretty much say: when considering the concept of World Building, it’s pretty hard to top God. But a writer goes for it each time they attempt to fill a blank page with words--in and of itself a supreme act of creation, second only to building a fully functioning universe in six working days with one day off to rest. And on that sixth day we’ll be talking about opening sentences, closing sentences, creating an entire world in between; structuring dialogue-driven scenes, weaving plots, the sheer magic of creating a character’s voice. So, please, bring along your favorite opening sentences, closing sentences and bits of character dialogue. We’ll have a shootout at the literary corral.
Jon will read from his writings to underscore his concept of building an imaginary but believable world within the real world. Then a bit of show and tell. Based on photographs shown, you will write an opening sentence. There will be a prize for the best sentence!
