Unveiling Truths: Navigating the Art of Journalism

While journalism evolves - from the Old Gray Lady herself - the New York Times - to gonzo journalism to citizen journalism – there are some core skills and tenants that remain constant. Learn more about the key elements of journalistic storytelling - the inverted pyramid structure, sourcing, interviewing, fact-checking, and pitching – and use them to take your non-fiction writing to the next level.

Angela Misri is an award-winning journalist and educator with 23 years of experience in newsrooms. She is also the author of seven fiction novels and an assistant professor of journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University.

    SATURDAY 25 MAY 2024

    1900 - 20:30 CET (VIA ZOOM)

In this workshop on secondary worlds, author Ken Liu will lead attendees on a reexamination of the concept of "worldbuilding" to find an alternative to the traditional approach of "objective" worldbuilding. Instead, a character-driven, "subjective" approach can help you find your story in a compelling new world.

The format of the workshop will consist of a mini-lecture followed by writing exercises (total of 60 minutes). There will be an additional 30 minutes of discussion/Q&A at the end.

Ken Liu is an American author of speculative fiction. A winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy awards, he wrote the Dandelion Dynasty, a silkpunk epic fantasy series (starting with The Grace of Kings), as well as short story collections The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories and The Hidden Girl and Other Stories. He also penned the Star Wars novel The Legends of Luke Skywalker. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, Liu worked as a software engineer, corporate lawyer, and litigation consultant. Liu frequently speaks at conferences and universities on a variety of topics, including futurism, machine-augmented creativity, history of technology, bookmaking, and the mathematics of origami.

    Time:   10:30-16:30

    10:30 - 13:00 Workshop    |    14:00 - 16:30 Critiquing session

    MORNING SESSION: 10:30 - 13:00

    Workshop: Poetry in Memoir

In this workshop, we explore the ways to find a memoir in you. Some people seem to be born with an innate ability to come up with innovative and imaginative ideas. They may have a natural inclination towards artistic expression, problem-solving, or thinking outside the box. Others can develop such ability by practicing. The workshop expands on the ways you can become a memoir writer, including finding your authentic voice and using poetic techniques in your writing to help transport the reader.

Bashir will read from his latest work at the end of the morning session.

    AFTERNOON SESSION: 14:00 - 16:30

    Critiquing - 8 participants maximum

The afternoon will be a critiquing session for eight participants. Pieces are limited to 1400 words of prose. They can be sent to Bashir in advance via GWG or they can be presented on the day. Please email us separately (genevawriters@gmail.com) if you would like to have your work critiqued.

Bashir Sakhawarz is an award-winning Afghan poet and novelist. His first poetry collection was awarded first prize for New Poetry by the Afghan Writers’ Association in 1978. Since then, he has published seven books in Persian and English. His latest novel Maargir The Snake Charmer was long-listed for the 2013 Economist Crossword Book Award. He won the 2015 Geneva Writers Group Literary Prize for Fiction. His memoir Escaping from Kabul was published by Pen and Sword Books in August 2023. A second memoir about an Afghan soldier fighting the Taliban, will be published in 2024. Bashir worked for the BBC, UN, International Red Cross, NGOs and governmental organizations in Africa, Asia, America and Europe for more than 30 years.
